press release

2018 was the 4th year of Risk Shield’s operations and what a year it has been for us! We developed and implemented weather-index insurance products, which insured over 1.1 million smallholder farmers in Zambia in the 2018-19 season. Approximately 2 million farmers (cumulatively) were insured for the second consecutive season via a government scheme in what is the single largest agriculture index insurance scheme in Africa. In addition, our products insured farmers via 5 private-sector aggregators in Zambia, including 2 micro-finance institutions and 3 agri-businesses. Our products also went live in Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia this season via a range of different agri-businesses, financial institutions and farmer associations.

This year, we also started new partnerships, product development and supported regulatory submission of products in Angola, Lesotho, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania. Life and Health micro-insurance products were also launched in Malawi and Zambia covering over 7,000 farmers. On the field, our team carried out extensive awareness raising and trainings in Zambia, directly training thousands of farmers and field operatives. Moreover, we completed feasibility studies on agriculture insurance, meso-level insurance and digital insurance in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. Extensive capacity building workshops for private-sector and governments were carried out in many countries, including Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. In-depth actuarial-analysis trainings for insurers were delivered in Malawi. Our consultants also continued projects in Bangladesh, Germany and Sri Lanka. We found time to speak at international conferences in Kenya, United States, Zambia and at the COP24 in Poland

Expect more of the same in 2019 as we continue this exhilarating journey in inclusive insurance and agricultural development in Africa and Asia!
